I was reading a newsletter and saw the following verse:

"Say (O Muhammad SAW): 'O people of the Scripture : Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allâh, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allâh. Then, if they turn away, say: "Bear witness that we are Muslims.'""

Narrated Ibn Abbas:

Abu Sufyan narrated to me personally, saying, "I set out during the Truce that had been concluded between me and Allah's Apostle. While I was in Sham, a letter sent by the Prophet was brought to Heraclius. Dihya Al-Kalbi had brought and given it to the governor of Busra, and the latter forwarded it to Heraclius. Heraclius said, 'Is there anyone from the people of this man who claims to be a prophet?' The people replied, 'Yes.' So I along with some of Quraishi men were called and we entered upon Heraclius, and we were seated in front of him. Then he said, 'Who amongst you is the nearest relative to the man who claims to be a prophet?' So they made me sit in front of him and made my companions sit behind me. Then he called upon his translator and said (to him). 'Tell them ( i.e. Abu Sufyan's companions) that I am going to ask him (i.e. Abu Sufyan) regarding that man who claims to be a prophet. So, if he tell me a lie, they should contradict him (instantly).' By Allah, had I not been afraid that my companions would consider me a liar, I would have told lies. Heraclius then said to his translator, 'Ask him: What is his (i.e. the Prophet's) family status amongst you? I said, 'He belongs to a noble family amongst us." Heraclius said, 'Was any of his ancestors a king?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Did you ever accuse him of telling lies before his saying what he has said?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Do the nobles follow him or the poor people?' I said, 'It is the poor who followed him.' He said, 'Is the number of his follower increasing or decreasing?' I said, 'The are increasing.' He said, 'Does anyone renounce his religion (i.e. Islam) after embracing it, being displeased with it?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Did you fight with him?' I replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'How was your fighting with him?' I said, 'The fighting between us was undecided and victory was shared by him and us by turns. He inflicts casualties upon us and we inflict casualties upon him.' He said, 'Did he ever betray?' I said, 'No, but now we are away from him in this truce and we do not know what he will do in it" Abu Sufyan added, "By Allah, I was not able to insert in my speech a word (against him) except that. Heraclius said, 'Did anybody else (amongst you) ever claimed the same (i.e. Islam) before him? I said, 'No.' Then Heraclius told his translator to tell me (i.e. Abu Sufyan), 'I asked you about his family status amongst you, and you told me that he comes from a noble family amongst you Verily, all Apostles come from the noblest family among their people. Then I asked you whether any of his ancestors was a king, and you denied that. Thereupon I thought that had one of his fore-fathers been a king, I would have said that he (i.e. Muhammad) was seeking to rule the kingdom of his fore-fathers. Then I asked you regarding his followers, whether they were the noble or the poor among the people, and you said that they were only the poor (who follow him). In fact, such are the followers of the Apostles. Then I asked you whether you have ever accused him of telling lies before saying what he said, and your reply was in the negative. Therefore, I took for granted that a man who did not tell a lie about others, could ever tell a lie about Allah. Then I asked you whether anyone of his followers had renounced his religion (i.e. Islam) after embracing it, being displeased with it, and you denied that. And such is Faith when it mixes with the cheerfulness of the hearts. Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing You claimed that they were increasing. That is the way of true faith till it is complete. Then I asked you whether you had ever fought with him, and you claimed that you had fought with him and the battle between you and him was undecided and the victory was shared by you and him in turns; he inflicted casual ties upon you and you inflicted casualties upon them. Such is the case with the Apostles; they are out to test and the final victory is for them. Then I asked you whether he had ever betrayed; you claimed that he had never betrayed. I need, Apostles never betray. Then I asked you whether anyone had said this statement before him; and you denied that. Thereupon I thought if somebody had said that statement before him, then I would have said that he was but a man copying some sayings said before him." Abu Safyan said, "Heraclius then asked me, 'What does he order you to do?' I said, 'He orders us (to offer) prayers and (to pay) Zakat and to keep good relationship with the Kith and kin and to be chaste.' Then Heraclius said, 'If whatever you have said, is true, he is really a prophet, and I knew that he ( i.e. the Prophet ) was going to appear, but I never thought that he would be from amongst you. If I were certain that I can reach him, I would like to meet him and if I were with him, I would wash his feet; and his kingdom will expand (surely to what is under my feet.' Then Heraclius asked for the letter of Allah's Apostle and read it wherein was written:

"In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. This letter is) from Muhammad, Apostle of Allah, to Heraclius, the sovereign of Byzantine........ Peace be upon him who follows the Right Path. Now then, I call you to embrace Islam. Embrace Islam and you will be saved (from Allah's Punishment); embrace Islam, and Allah will give you a double reward, but if you reject this, you will be responsible for the sins of all the people of your kingdom (Allah's Statement):--"O the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Come to a word common to you and us that we worship None but Allah....bear witness that we are Muslims.' (3.64)

When he finished reading the letter, voices grew louder near him and there was a great hue and cry, and we were ordered to go out." Abu Sufyan added, "While coming out, I said to my companions, 'The situation of Ibn Abu Kabsha (i.e. Muhammad) has become strong; even the king of Banu Al-Asfar is afraid of him.' So I continued to believe that Allah's Apostle would be victorious, till Allah made me embrace Islam." Az-Zuhri said, "Heraclius then invited all the chiefs of the Byzantines and had them assembled in his house and said, 'O group of Byzantines! Do you wish to have a permanent success and guidance and that your kingdom should remain with you?' (Immediately after hearing that), they rushed towards the gate like onagers, but they found them closed. Heraclius then said, 'Bring them back to me.' So he called them and said, 'I just wanted to test the strength of your adherence to your religion. Now I have observed of you that which I like.' Then the people fell in prostration before him and became pleased with him." (See Hadith No. 6,Vol 1)

Karachi and MQM

After the events of May 12, 2007, I was really disturbed about what we all witnessed. I was recently in Karachi (before May 12) and talking to people gave me an impression that MQM was indeed doing good job. The events of May 12, just remind us the true reality on the ground. No matter what good MQM has done for Karachi, there are always these people who have something to complain about.

There is no doubt MQM shot themselves in the foot when they took up arms on May 12th against an armed group of people. It would have been wiser for the muttehda people to sit and relax at home that day. Let the EX-CJ do whatever he wanted to do. It is too late now so there is no reason to gripe about it. What is important now is to see what MQM local government is doing to clean its image. I am hoping that they will take measures to eliminate the dada-geri mentality and work more for the goodness of Karachi.

I was reading some comments about Karachi and here is something good that came to my attention that actually made me write this posting.... This guy was responding to someone who always has something negative about MQM...

1. If anybody gets killed in Karachi and belongs to any other party other than mqm, then MQM is the one who killed him
2. If Mqm humdard gets killed, then he was going to change his mind so they killed him

I am just wondering who are THEY?? If MQM workers are getting killed by MQM workers then who are those workers who killing other workers???
4. If MQM is in opposition, then you ppl cry that MQM wants to break Pakistan, they are against the Army, the Country, they destroying the peace and all they want is Strike.Strike is not the solution,,GHareeb marta hai..OHH my GOD Evil ppl
5. If MQM is in Government, then you ppl Cry they are with the dictator, Army unkai saath hai, Lets call a strike, burn karachi, shutdown...."

Four Major Categories

In a recent speech, Dr Israr Ahmed said that west had divided Muslims into four major categories: those with a social and political programme for the revival of Islam (fundamentalists), stereotype Moulvis (traditionalists), those wanted changing Islam according to wishes and whims of the West (modernists) and secularists.

He said that the West wanted to eliminate fundamentalists, isolate traditionalists, provide funds and media platforms to modernists and encourage secularists. Read more about it here.

Why is it so difficult to swallow fundamental values of Islam? I mean it is OK for a Jewish person to grow beard, wear yarmulkes and it is ok for a Christian person to wear crosses and publicly draw crosses in air, but when Muslims try to pray, they get barred from getting in a plane? why is it Islam that has to be questioned when a Muslim does something wrong. Why does west think that Islam has to be changed and not Muslims? I mean Christians have done bad things too. i do not see anyone questioning Christianity. Hindus have done bad things too. no one questions Hindu faith. oh and puuuleaeese do not give me that crap that Islam is a violent religion and does not preach to live in peace. do your homework on Islam and history before accusing the religion.

"KARACHI, Sept 20: Four women members of the Sindh Assembly belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and an employee of the Governor’s House were robbed of cash and valuables by four armed men on Jehangir Road on Tuesday night.

MPAs Rehana Nasreen, Asma Sherwani, Aziza Qazalbash and Fareen Ambreen were going to the MQM Headquarters in Azizabad after attending a meeting at the Governor’s House in a car driven by Khalid Mehmood when it was intercepted by the robbers on two motorcycles.

This is way too hilarious in my opinion. No one is safe in Karachi any more. I do have one thing to say. People (non karachites) have long accused MQM as the party behind all these activities. Knowing what I know, no one in MQM would dare do such a thing against an MQM MP. Trust me on that one.

On the other note, what were these MPs doing with 150K cash on them? Dear Mr. Governer, CM and Nazim, please do something about this lawlessness. We have trusted you with our votes and confidence. It could be your sister, mother or daughter who gets robbed on gun point tomorrow. Have you ever thought about it? When are you going to take some serious action about this situation?

Benedict's recent comments

Here we go again. This time the top most authority representing a major religion shows how ignorant people are about Islam. I do not claim to know Benedict and I truly do not know all this pope business. I do believe that when people are at this top level, they must refrain from such ignorant and irresponsible behavior. Haven't we seen enough bloodshed this year already? I am glad Pakistan took some action at the state level. India, the largest, so-called democracy did what they do best. Indian government seized copies of newspapers which reported the news (bbc). Turkey, another great democratic country, seems to be getting tense as well. I just hope this does not become another reason for people to start going nuts.

Vande Mataram - India's National Song that came into existence when Britishers started forcing the people of subcontinent to sing "God Save the Queen". This national song of India, dearer to many, has specific references to Hindu Goddess "Durga", that is why Muslims are against singing along to this song. I wish that the matter was left at this stage.

But No. Hindu extremists are making every effort to make this religious song compulsory before the school starts. I hope and I wish that international observers and civil liberty organizations take notice of this form of extremism. If the Indian government wants this song to be sung at every school, than Muslims kids should be spared and instead they should sing "Lab pay aati hai dua bun kay tamanna meri" instead. Now that would be a correct form of freedom of religion.

Muslims can direct du'a only to Allah. Anything else would be classified as shirk. In the Quran it says: "Say: 'I do no more than invoke my Lord, and I join not with Him any (false god).'" 72:20

And Shirk is the worst form of sin, the worst form of disrespect and the worst form of ungratefulness a man can commit against Allah.

The Month of Sha'ban

We are in the month of Sha'ban. Only 20 days away from Ramadhan. It is highly recommended to fast in the month of Sha'ban if you start before the 15th of Sha'ban (acc. to the sunnah I follow). It is time to start preparing for Ramadhan. InshaAllah, most of the my breaking of fast (Iftar) would be at the Masjid. May Allah help me in controlling my temper when I deal with people at the Masjid and everywhere else. Also, please try to stay away from Hilal and Halal issue. hehe

Now people in Briton are questioning themselves what is causing all this disruption and terrorism. Clearly, the arrested individuals are British citizens and have all the freedoms that they need. So there goes that argument where muslims are blamed for lack of freedom which causes this extreme behavior. So what is it that is causing these young individuals to go nuts?

Read this news article and think. Could it be the foreign policy that is causing all this? Under any circumstances, terrorism is not allowed in Islam. The young terrorists were completely and totally wrong in doing what they were doing. They should be punished to the fullest if they are found guilty. On the other hand how can we prevent such things happening again? That is the question that we should all be asking ourselves.

We know that Iraq is a mess. Afghanistan is no different. Now Lebanon. Is there an end to this? Drag Iran and Syria into it as well and let's begin the new world order. Impose Iraq like Democracy on other countries since other form of democracy is just not good enough.

And there the defunct OIC is meeting again. These so called leaders are just waking up to the crises. Didn't they know that the human toll would be enormous? Lebanon is a member of OIC. None of the leaders have come out and publicly denounced this aggression. Most of these leaders are puppets any way otherwise they would be labeled as leaders of terrorist organizations.

And for the people who are blaming Hamas and Hizbollah for "kidnapping" the soldiers, where were your thoughts when IDF "arrested" Palestinian law makers? Wasn't that a crime? Oh and for those of you who say why Arabs are firing rockets at Israeli civilians, why didn't you object when Israel killed these picnickers?

We can blame and point fingers at every direction all day. Unless we target the root causes of all this violence we will never achieve peace in this world. We all want ourselevs to live in peace and our children to grow in peace. We must all work together to find the root causes of this disturbance in the world and fix it where we can. Supplying more arms to one group and labeling every one whom we do not like as a terrorist wouldn't help.

While the US House of representatives passed by a 410-8 margin a resolution staunchly supporting Israel in the confrontation as reported by WSJ <link here>, more innocent civilians are dying everyday in Lebanon. There are reports <here> and <here> that US is rushing more bombs to Israel.

US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton gives a press conference before entering the UN Security Council in New York. Bolton said there was no moral equivalence between the civilian casualties from the Israeli raids in Lebanon and those killed in Israel from "malicious terrorist acts".

This reiterates my point that Europe has laws that protect people of Jewish faith but there are no similar laws that punish people for insulting Islam. Why are these double standards? Are Muslims not raising their voices loud enough or our voice don't matter at all? This recent episode where Mr. Ken Livingstone insulted a Jewish journalist, shows that the Europeans believe that people should act and speak responsibly. But when it comes to Muslims and their issues, no such "values" exist.

We need an international law that would defend our rights as Muslims and a law that would punish anyone who insults Muslims on the basis of religion or Islam in general. If there are laws that protect Jewish people or African American people, why isn’t there a law that would protect Muslims and Islam in general from hate speech? Do not take me wrong. The best protection is the protection of Allah and whoever Allah protects, no one can harm.
